When you
apply the brakes you want the pads to hit the rim
at a point that is comfortable for you, so you
don't have to pull your hand too far to fully
apply them. Make sure you never have to pull the
brake lever all the way to the handlebar, as you
run the risk of not being able to fully apply the
brakes. Bear in mind that the brake lever may need
adjusting as the pads gradually wear down, until
they need replacing.
Because of
the importance of efficient braking DO NOT attempt
any maintenance on your brakes unless you are
completely confident in your own ability.
Brake
Lever Starting Position
You may want
to adjust the starting position of the brake lever
depending on how close you want it to your hand
(or maybe your hands are just freakishly small!).
Anyway, to do this, use the adjusting screw on the
brake lever to get the lever at a comfortable
position. Bear in mind that moving the lever
closer to the bar will reduce the 'pull angle'
you'll have so ensure the brakes are properly
tuned.
Adjusting
Cable Tension At The Brake Lever
Turning the
cable tension adjuster changes how far you'll have
to pull the levers before the brakes are applied.
By dialling it towards the lever you'll decrease
the tension in the cable and therefore you'll need
to pull the lever further to fully apply the
brakes. By dialling it away you'll increase the
tension and reduce the distance that you need to
pull the lever.
It really
depends on your own personal preference and riding
style, but bear in mind that there should always
be at least 11/2 -2cm between the lever
and bars when the brakes are fully applied.
Remember to account for pad wear and check the
pads regularly to see if they need replacing (see Replacing
Brake Pads).
